In short: high ping most often comes from Wi-Fi, background downloads and a far-away game server. Plug in a cable, pause Steam, torrents and updates, and pick a closer region in the game. That solves most cases. If ping stays high, check the route from your network to the game server.
What ping is normal
| Ping | How it feels |
|---|---|
| under 30 ms | Perfect, as if the server is next door |
| 30-60 ms | Great, unnoticeable in any game |
| 60-100 ms | Fine for most games, noticeable in shooters |
| 100-150 ms | Noticeable: delayed shots, twitching |
| over 150 ms | Hard to play fast games |
Stability matters as much as the number. A steady 80 ms beats jumps from 30 to 200.
Where high ping comes from
Wi-Fi instead of a cable
Wireless adds delay and, worse, instability. The signal fades through walls, neighbour routers interfere, even a kitchen microwave does.
How to tell. Plug the computer in with a cable and compare. If ping became steadier, it was the Wi-Fi.
What to do. Play over a cable. If you use Wi-Fi, pick the 5 GHz network and sit closer to the router.
Something downloads in the background
A Steam download, a Windows update, cloud sync, a torrent on another computer. The line is full and game packets wait in a queue.
How to tell. Ping is high and jumpy. Open the task manager and see what uses the network.
What to do. Pause downloads while you play. Steam has a setting that pauses downloads during gameplay.
The game server is far away
Signals travel through cables and distance is real. London to Frankfurt is about 15 ms, to New York more than 70.
How to tell. Check which region is selected in the settings or the matchmaking menu.
What to do. Pick the closest region.
Evening network load
In the evening everyone is online at once, the network is crowded and ping grows for everyone.
How to tell. Fine in the morning, bad in the evening.
What to do. If it happens every day, contact your home internet support or think about another connection.
A bad route to the server
Sometimes traffic to a game server takes a strange way, through other cities or even countries. Speed can be great while ping to one specific game is high.
How to tell. Ping is high only in one game or to one region, and normal elsewhere.
This is where a VPN can help, and it is the only case when a VPN lowers ping. I send traffic along a different route, so if the usual route is bad, ping may drop. But honestly: normally a VPN adds 5-20 ms, because traffic takes a detour through the server. Compare ping with the VPN on and off, and keep whichever number is lower.
Mixing up ping and frame drops
If the picture stutters while ping is fine, the computer needs more FPS. Graphics settings help here.
What to expect
- Internet “booster” apps. Most leave speed unchanged, some make the system slower.
- A pricier plan. Speed barely affects ping: 100 and 500 Mbps give the same ping.
- Closing the browser. Only helps if something in it is downloading or playing video.
Summary
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| Ping jumps | Use a cable, pause downloads |
| Ping is high but steady | Pick a closer server region |
| Bad only in the evening | Test in the morning, contact your home internet support |
| High in one game only | It is the route, try a VPN and compare |
| Ping fine, picture stutters | Lower graphics settings |
